The purpose of this site is still being defined. Knowing who I am as a person, it will probably be in a constant state of re-defining. That’s probably good, considering that if you aren’t changing anymore, you’re most likely dead.
The overall, arching reason I decided to start my own personal website a la the 1997ish-to-2008ish internet community is pretty simple. Social media was fun until it wasn’t anymore. We deserve better, it’s past time to build that, and some of “better” will probably end up looking like that past version of the internet. It just… felt better. There are academics who very articulately go into why, but I’m not one of them. Suffice it to say, we deserve nice things. I deserve nice things. If the corporate internet we’ve been herded into isn’t providing nice experiences, we are fully capable of building them ourselves. It’s not even actually that hard. A lot of us have forgotten that. Some of us are learning it for the first time.
When I decided months ago to build my own site, the intent was to give myself an out from the toxic atmospheres of Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, all of their manipulative algorithms, and the neverending assault of sketchy ads – while still staying connected to my friends and loved ones by syndicating to the socials. So this is very much still going to be a place of silly memes, jokes, and the kind of this-makes-things-easier-in-my-experience tips that are shared among friends. As is the nature of all things internet, I’m sure the site will escape containment from my social sphere. That’s fine with me. I hope being here feels good. I hope I say and share things that make your life better. That this thing I’m building will be a haven in some way for weirdos like me.
Some things you won’t find here:
- Annoying fucking pop-ups telling you to subscribe to my newsletter.
- A shitty dropshipping store.
- High production value in content (Actually, I hope that’s the last time I EVER use the word “content” on this site.)
- A “super great deal” on my e-course.
- Sketchy sponsored posts or ads.
- Any agenda to separate you from your money. (Disclaimer: We live in a capitalist hellscape that we must make money to survive in, so I reserve the right to use referral links IF AND ONLY IF I’ve actually tried and enjoyed the product in question. I also accept monthly or one-time donations on Ko-Fi, which is a great way to show thanks if something I post helps you or brings joy to your day.)
Some things you will find here:
- A pretty damn low-fi vibe, honestly. Which is nice.
- Sarcastic and dorky T-shirts and such (because, again, dammit Capitalism.)
- My bullshit opinions.
- Silliness. There will be WHIMSY, dammit!
- Sharing of mostly-free ideas that I’ve ACTUALLY tried, that LEGITIMATELY make my life better.
- A borderline-uncomfortable amount of swear-words, probably.
- Link-lists to other sites that kick ass, with varying degrees of success in organizing said lists.
I look forward to sharing weird shit, fun shit, and shit that just plain makes life better. This is intended to be a two-way conversation, not just a one-way megaphone for Me Me Me, so please share back your own thoughts, experiences, and weird shit that you think would make me smile in the comments of my posts. And thanks for choosing to spend some of your time here.
I’ll probably post blogs a few times a month. If you want to engage in everyday, multiple-times-a-day, social media bullshittery with me, my Mastodon is the best place for that.
I’m looking forward to whatever you do with this!
And maybe you could one day make a post about how to have a good RSS feed so we can follow your updates easily?
You’re so good at explaining stuff like that!
I’m so sorry I never replied to this! It got stuck in a spam filter queue and… uh, well, I’m not very good at this stuff yet. But your request has been noted! I’m vetting RSS readers myself – haven’t actually found a product that I am comfortable recommending to the masses just yet. Once I do, and once I have given my own RSS collection a good curating, I will take a stab at giving suggestions.
Thank you again for reading, and for always being so damn supportive and nice.
